What is an upsell (upgrade offer) on Shopify?
An upsell, or upgrade offer, is a campaign that offers a customer a better product or a bigger variant in place of the item they are buying, so the original cart line is replaced rather than a second item being added. In Discount Prime it shows as an upgrade banner on the product page and a swap card with undo in the cart, for example "Upgrade to Signature Loafer - only $65 more". That is the difference from a cross-sell: a cross-sell adds an accessory next to the trigger, while an upsell leaves the customer with one better item. Any incentive is optional and applies only to lines swapped by the widget. Upsell is one of Discount Prime's 14+ campaign types, all in one install.
Everything an upgrade offer needs
Swap, not add
Switch replaces the trigger line with the upgrade, so the customer ends with one better item instead of two.
Better product or bigger variant
Offer a premium sibling product, or climb a price-ordered option such as 30 ml to 50 ml to 100 ml.
Smart ladders
On Ultimate, rules find upgrades across the catalog: same type, higher price, better margin.
Cap the difference
Promise the customer pays at most $X more. The incentive covers the rest per unit and follows price changes.
The real price gap, live
{title} and {diff} fill in automatically, per language, so the banner always states the honest difference.
One-tap undo
A toast with Undo stays for a window you set from 3 to 30 seconds, so an accidental swap is easy to reverse.
Every Upsell setting, explained
Every option in the Upsell builder and the Upsell widget, using the exact names you will see in the app. Upsell is on Prime and above; settings marked Ultimate need the Ultimate plan.
Scenarios (optional starting points)
Pick a scenario to pre-fill the builder, or start from a blank campaign.
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Better product swap | Pre-fills Better product mode with Manual picks and no incentive. | |
| Bigger size (variant) | Pre-fills Bigger variant mode, for upgrading to a larger size of the same product. | |
| Capped difference | Pre-fills the Cap the difference incentive, so the customer pays at most a set amount more. | |
| Smart ladders | Pre-fills rule-based upgrades that find candidates across your catalog. | Ultimate |
| More units (3-pack) | Opens the Tiered Quantity builder instead, because a quantity upsell is a different campaign type. |
Name and phrasing
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign name | The internal name of the campaign in your admin. | Prime |
| Phrasing template | The banner text, default "Upgrade to {title} - only {diff} more". {title} and {diff} are replaced automatically, per language; leave it blank to use the widget's default text. |
Trigger and upgrade mode
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Products the customer is buying | Under "When the customer is buying", pick the specific products that trigger the offer. Rule triggers such as collection or vendor are not available yet. | |
| Upgrade mode: Better product | Offers a different, higher-priced product in place of the trigger, for example Derby to Premium Loafer. | |
| Upgrade mode: Bigger variant | Offers a larger size of the same product along an option whose prices increase. If no option qualifies, the builder says so and suggests Better product mode. |
Upgrade to
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Manual picks | Up to 6 products you choose as the upgrade for the triggers. | Prime |
| Pool | Draws upgrades from a collection, tag, vendor or product type. | Prime |
| Smart ladders | Rules find candidates that are the same type, higher priced and better margin. Pin or exclude candidates the rules get wrong. | Ultimate |
| Preview of upgrade offers | Lists each candidate with its price and whether it is above the trigger, before you save. | |
| Downsell check | Every upgrade must be priced above the trigger. Anything at or below it is flagged as a downsell and must be fixed before saving. | |
| Size ladder (Bigger variant) | The builder lists each trigger's size ladder and lets you choose the option to climb. |
Incentive
Optional. The incentive applies only to lines swapped by the widget, never to the same product bought directly.
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| No incentive | The default. Most upgrades are a pure margin play, so the price gap alone does the persuading. | |
| % off upgrade | A percentage off the upgraded line. | |
| $ off upgrade | A fixed amount off the upgraded line. It drifts when either price changes. | |
| Cap the difference | The customer pays at most $X more; the incentive covers the rest, per unit. It tracks price changes automatically. | |
| Storefront copy preview | A live preview of exactly what customers will read with the chosen incentive. |
How it combines
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Best deal wins | The default. When other discounts also apply, the customer gets the single best deal. | |
| Stack on product discounts | Lets the upsell incentive stack with product discounts instead of competing with them. |
Placement and scheduling
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Product page banner | Shows the upgrade banner on trigger product pages, with a Switch button. | |
| Cart swap card | Shows the swap card in the cart, with undo after the swap. | |
| Both | Banner on the product page and swap card in the cart, which also catches customers who added the trigger from elsewhere. | |
| None | No storefront placement for the campaign. | |
| Manage widget settings | Opens the Upsell widget to edit texts and colors for the banner and card. | |
| Schedule | Set start and end dates, then click Save. |
Storefront display and widget
Found under Widgets, then Upsell. Requires an active Upsell campaign and the app embed. A campaign's own Phrasing template wins over the defaults here.
| Setting | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Display widget on store | The master on/off switch for the banner and swap card. | |
| Default phrasing | Used when a campaign leaves its phrasing blank. Keep {title} and {diff} exactly as written. | |
| No extra cost text | Shown instead of the default phrasing when the upgrade costs nothing extra after the incentive, so the banner never says "only $0.00 more". | |
| Upgrade button | The cart card button (default "Upgrade"). | |
| Switch button | The product page banner button that swaps the cart line (default "Switch"). | |
| Undo text | The label of the undo button on the toast. | |
| Undo window | How long the undo toast stays, from 3 to 30 seconds. | |
| Swapped toast text | Shown after a swap; {title} is replaced by the new product. | |
| Error text | Shown on the cart card when the swap fails. | |
| Dismiss label | The accessibility label of the x button on the cart card. | |
| Colors | Banner and card colors, plus button colors. | |
| Preview | Switches between Product page, Cart and After swap, and between the states Pays more, No extra cost and Show error. It also replays the toast countdown. |
How Upsell works in Discount Prime
Pick the trigger and mode
Choose the products the customer is buying, then Better product or Bigger variant.
Set the upgrade and incentive
Use Manual picks, a Pool or Smart ladders, and choose no incentive, % off, $ off or Cap the difference.
Place it and launch
Show a product page banner, a cart swap card or both, schedule it and save.
Why merchants pick Discount Prime for upsells
Margin first
No incentive is the default, so a better-margin upgrade is not discounted away.
No accidental downsells
Upgrades at or below the trigger price are flagged and must be fixed before saving.
Incentive only on swaps
The premium product keeps its full price for anyone who buys it directly.
One app, every mechanic
Upsell runs next to Cross-sell, Free Gift, Product Bundle and more: 14+ campaign types in one install.
Upsell questions, answered
How do I upsell a premium product without adding a second item to the cart?
Use Upsell in Better product mode. The trigger line leaves the cart and the upgrade takes its place, so the customer is asked "would you rather have this?" instead of "would you also like this?". A Cross-sell recommendation would have left them with two pairs of shoes, or more likely, none of the suggestion.
In one scenario, a footwear brand sold a $120 Classic Derby and a $185 Signature Loafer with better margin. With Manual picks, no incentive and placement on both the product page and the cart, the swap card read "Upgrade to Signature Loafer - only $65 more". The loafer's share of shoe orders went from 19% to 41%, without giving any margin back.
How do I get customers to buy the bigger size on Shopify?
Use Bigger variant mode. It needs an option whose prices increase, usually Size, and it always offers the next rung of that ladder while every other choice the customer made, such as scent or formula, is kept. A size dropdown lists options; a banner with the real price gap recommends one.
A skincare brand sold a serum at $38 for 30 ml, $54 for 50 ml and $92 for 100 ml, and 70% of orders were the smallest bottle. The banner offered the 50 ml for $16 more, and the 50 ml buyers were offered the 100 ml for $38 more. The 30 ml share dropped from 70% to 44%. Watch sale prices: a sale that drops a bigger size below a smaller one breaks the ladder at that step.
Should I discount an upsell, and how much?
Often not. Most upgrades are a pure margin play, which is why No incentive is the default. When the gap is too large for customers to jump, Cap the difference is usually the right shape: the customer pays at most $X more and the incentive covers the rest, per unit, recalculated when prices change. A percentage scales with the premium price, not the gap, and a fixed amount drifts.
An audio brand had a $149 mid-range model and a $219 flagship. A $15 cap made the incentive $55, so a swapped flagship cost $164 while a direct purchase stayed at $219. If the flagship rose to $229, the incentive became $65 and the promise still held. Flagship share of orders went from 22% to 48%.
How do I set up upsells across a large catalog?
On Ultimate, Smart ladders lets rules find the upgrade for each trigger: same product type, higher price, better margin. You review the preview, pin candidates where you disagree with the ranking and exclude ones that are technically higher priced but really a different kind of product. Triggers are still specific products, so refresh the list when you launch new entry-level items.
A cookware brand with 640 products had stalled at 90 rows of a hand-built upgrade spreadsheet. It selected 180 entry-level triggers, used Smart ladders with a 5% incentive on swapped lines, and pinned or excluded a few pairings. New premium pans joined the ladders without anyone editing the campaign, and the upgrade rate reached 17% of eligible cookware orders.
Upsell vs Cross-sell
Both campaigns react to what is in the cart. The difference is what happens to the line: Upsell replaces it, Cross-sell adds to it.
| Upsell | Cross-sell | |
|---|---|---|
| Cart result | Line replaced | Line added |
| Customer ends with | One better item | Trigger plus add-on |
| Incentive/discount | Optional, only on swapped lines | On the add-on |
| Best for | Premium alternatives, bigger sizes | Accessories |

Upsell FAQ
Which Discount Prime plan includes Upsell?
Upsell is on the Prime plan and above. Better product and Bigger variant modes, Manual picks, Pool, every incentive type and the Upsell widget are available on Prime. Smart ladders, where rules find upgrades by product type, price and margin, needs the Ultimate plan.
Does an upsell need a discount code?
No. Upsell is automatic. The customer taps Switch on the product page banner or the cart swap card, the trigger line is replaced by the upgrade, and the swapped line is tagged as an upgrade. Any incentive you set is applied to that tagged line at checkout without a code.
What is the difference between Upsell and Cross-sell?
Upsell replaces, Cross-sell adds. An upsell swaps the line the customer is buying for a better product or bigger size, so they end with one better item. A cross-sell adds an accessory next to the trigger. If you want the customer to buy two items, use Cross-sell; if you want the one item to be better, use Upsell.
How does an upsell incentive combine with other discounts?
You choose. The default, Best deal wins, gives the customer the single best deal when other discounts also apply. Stack on product discounts lets the upsell incentive stack with product discounts instead. Either way, the incentive only applies to lines swapped by the widget, never to the same product bought directly.
Why is my upgrade flagged as a downsell?
Every upgrade must be priced above the trigger. A candidate at or below the trigger's price is flagged as a downsell and must be fixed before you can save. In Bigger variant mode, also check variant prices: a sale that drops a bigger size below a smaller one breaks the ladder at that step.
Can the customer undo a swap?
Yes. After a swap, a toast with an Undo button appears, and tapping it restores the original line. You set how long the undo toast stays in the Upsell widget settings, anywhere from 3 to 30 seconds. Too short a window makes it hard for customers to reverse an accidental swap.
Why doesn't the upsell banner show on my product?
Usually the product is not in the campaign's trigger list, or the placement is set to the cart swap card only. Also check that the campaign is active, that Display widget on store is switched on in the Upsell widget, and that the Discount Prime app embed is enabled in your theme.
